WE LOVE TO WELCOME EXPERIENCED PRINTMAKERS TO BANGOR. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SPEND SOME CREATIVE TIME IN IRELAND WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO WELCOME YOU TO SEACOURT ON A SELF-ARRANGED RESIDENCY.

There is no formal application process – but we do need you to outline your experience in printmaking and meet our membership standard.

You get free 24/7 access to our facility in exchange for an artist talk/demo and a donated print. You can buy a range of materials and if you’d like to learn a specific technique we can arrange for one to one teaching for a fee.

If you are seeking funding to support your visit we can provide you with a letter confirming your residency dates. Unfortunately we cannot provide any financial support for travel or accommodation but we can recommend some reasonably priced Bed & Breakfast accommodation.

With Heart and Hand

In spring 2021, Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive commissioned six artists from Seacourt Print Workshop in Bangor to make a creative response to With Heart and Hand, a UTV programme made in 1966 to commemorate the Battle of the Somme.

𝙲𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚍𝚛𝚎𝚗'𝚜 𝙼𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚕 𝙷𝚎𝚊𝚕𝚝𝚑 𝚆𝚎𝚎𝚔

As Children's mental health week is coming to a close, we have been reflecting on some of the work we have done recently with the children of St Comgall's Primary School Bangor.

Now in our 6th week of the project, 2 Seacourt artists, @@rachel_india_alexander and @wilhelminapeace have been working with 2 P7 classes to explore various ideas around how artists mediate the world. Seacourt's Create a Space project is designed around using art as a wellbeing resource that can be tapped into as often as necessary. At this pivotal point in a child's transition onto the next stage of their life and education, the impact of this project is felt through every session.

The children in Rachel's group have been exploring themes such as automatic drawing, writing and movement using charcoal, alongside mixed media collage and Digital art through the use of green screen and animation. Rachel has also been sharing some knowledge on Dadaism, narrative and performance art to explore the concept of free thought and working intuitively.

These are a few examples from Rachel's class, with more to come about what Wilhelmina has been up to with her group.

These beautiful monotypes by @sarabrownartist and @ceciliastephens7988 are the result of a day of experimentation and inky play. Both Sara and Cecilia are long-standing members of our workshop and these prints reflect the totally immersive way in which they work.

We were speaking about how printmakers tend to collect objects and artefacts that become invaluable towards the creation of a perfect texture or form and how upsetting it is when those are destroyed or go missing.

You can see here, on image 8, how Sara has actually scribed into the ink on her work surface to create the texture of the fish she then transferred via the roller onto her plate. All of these little tricks come together within our shared learning environment as members regularly share ideas and advice.

We have had an absolute blast, learning lots about the history behind this beautiful building, built in 1920, to the designs of architect James A. Hanna.

Such as that In 1990 there was a proposal to demolish the bank but this met with a public outcry and the bank was instead extended to the rear by local practice Knox and Markwell.

The building continued to trade as a bank until 2017 when it closed, and had been empty before Seacourt's pop-up the summer of 2019, and then again until we relocated September 2021.

We are so excited to start filling the space with shared creativity, existential fortune and a welcoming environment for all to rummage through our print racks and perhaps create your very own printed souvenir.

Since moving into the old bank building on Main Street, Bangor, nearly 5 months ago, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster🎢. From manoeuvring our presses into the our new premises and negotiating space, to ministerial visits and uncovering a beautiful tiled floor underneath the bank's blue carpet tiles-it's been a journey 😅.

Naturally we were a bit apprehensive prior to the move, as we had gotten quite comfortable in our old premises at Balloo Industrial Estate, but as in times of upheaval, it has brought our small creative community closer and even welcomed a few newbies along the way 🥰.

I am always fascinated by Helen Roberts' beautiful prints (aka @hedgerowprints114) as well as her work station! From little postcards of naturally dyed paper, to big green fern leaves rustling around in a canvas bag-usually hand-printed by Helen- there is always something quite magical about the way she rummages through her materials, inks them up and plays around with layers, tones and forms.

Helen is passionate about sustainable eco printing, which is a sustainable method of printmaking through the use of natural dyes and transferring them in an environmentally sustainable way onto paper or canvas.

Helen experiments at home with an array of natural dyes, such as those found in eucalyptus leaves, turmeric, coffee, flower pulp and herbs. using a variety of printmaking methods to explore this concept, Helen specialises in both cyanotype and mono-printing printmaking techniques.
